KNUST Appoints Prof Rita Akosua Dickson as its new Vice Chancellor


The Governing Council of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, has appointed Professor Mrs Rita Akosua Dickson as the new vice-chancellor of the university, with effect from  1st August 2020 to 31st July, 2020.

 The Council made the appointment at its ''258th (Special) Meeting on Thursday, 25th June, 2020 upon the acceptance of the Report of the Search Committee for the Appointment of Vice-Chancellor for the University'', as indicated in a letter from the Office of the Registrar.
Notice of Appointment 

 Prof Mrs Akosua Dickson replaces Prof Kwasi Obiri Danso as vice-chancellor, who was first appointed in 2016, having served the usual four-year term.

 The appointment of Prof Mrs Akosua Dickson to the high office of the vice-chancellor of KNUST is a historic one; not only in the life of the university, but also in Ghana and beyond. 

 Her appointment makes her the first female VC of KNUST and the second in Ghana, after Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, former minister for education in the Mahama-led government, who was appointed VC of University of Cape Coast (UCC) in 2008.

About Prof Rita Akosua Dickson


Until her appointment to the high office of the KNUST VC, she was the pro vice-chancellor.
Prof. (Mrs) Dickson was the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences before her appointment as the pro VC.
She graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy from KNUST in 1994.
She pursued graduate studies leading to the award of MPharm in Pharmacognosy in 1999 and was appointed a lecturer the following year in the Department of Pharmacognosy, Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, KNUST.
She also holds a Ph.D. and a Graduate Certificate in Academic Practice (GCAP) from Kings College, London.

 She is admired by many people, especially women and girls, not just in KNUST but across Ghana and beyond local borders.

 She is personally known to many to be a calm person who would always give a listening ear. 

 This breakthrough appointment would certainly lift the countenance of the female community in various levels of society in Ghana and beyond.

Emperor Tewodros II ruled over Ethiopia from 1855 till his death in 1868. His rule brought considerable development and change to the military and the structure of governance such that his era is described as the beginning of Modern Ethiopia.
