Need for Peace: To Our Next General Elections

Ghana: Elections 2020 on 7th December By Bright Rockson On 7th December 2020, Ghana will hold its seventh general elections in the Fourth Republic to elect a President and Members of Parliament for the next four years of national administrative  life. The national atmosphere is tensed. All over the country, political campaigns  are heightened, taking on various shapes and colours;  local and international observers are ready to observe; new and experienced electorates are prepared to express their preference on the ballot paper. More than these, the campaign  for peace before, during, and after the elections is on - a cause supported by virtually all citizens; along with pacific echoes from the international  community. Prayers are being said, people are marching for peace, relevant videos and songs and posters are rife, just for peace to prevail. Since the Fourth Republic began, Ghanaians have experienced relatively peaceful elections and transition of power in sub-Saharan Africa. Yet

KNUST Appoints Prof Rita Akosua Dickson as its new Vice Chancellor

The Governing Council of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, has appointed Professor Mrs Rita Akosua Dickson as the new vice-chancellor of the university, with effect from  1st August 2020 to 31st July, 2020. The Council made the appointment at its ''258th (Special) Meeting on Thursday, 25th June, 2020 upon the acceptance of the Report of the Search Committee for the Appointment of Vice-Chancellor for the University'', as indicated in a letter from the Office of the Registrar. Notice of Appointment  Prof Mrs Akosua Dickson replaces Prof Kwasi Obiri Danso as vice-chancellor, who was first appointed in 2016, having served the usual four-year term. 2GB Data Bonanza from MTN Ghana

To compensate for the network mishap experienced by its customers a few days ago, MTN Ghana has decided to give away 2GB free data bundle to all its subscribers. According to the CEO of MTN Ghana, Mr Selorm Adadevoh, "All customers on MTN Ghana's network will receive free 2GB data valid for two days. The 'goodwill' package is effective today, Thursday January 23, 2020. Many MTN Ghana customers especially users of smartphones have confirmed they have the data bundle allocation. SID Hits The Streets

Team members getting ready to engage prospects  As part of its disability advocacy endeavour, Strength in Disability KNUST on Saturday, 21st September 2019 embarked on an outreach to the streets of Kumasi around the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), in the Oforikrom Municipality. The outreach saw team members interacting with persons with disabilities (PWDs) who normally beg on the streets for survival. The engagement was to enable the team ascertain the challenges they face and also show them there are people who care about them. A mobility-impaired woman who gave her name as Josephine Arthur, a single parent who has to seek alms from passersby in order to cater for her needs  and that of her child shared her story as the team interacted with her. Disability is not inability: students undertake a life-affirming project

SID Project A team of students from selected tertiary institutions in Ghana is embarking on a project intended to affect many lives positively and ultimately contribute significantly to societal development. The project, dubbed "Strength In Disability" (SID), is a joint effort of the Ghana Association of Disability and Rehabilitation Students (GADRES -KNUST) and other institutions which basically seeks to educate society on the relevance of Persons Living with Disabilities (PLWDs); and the fact that having a disability does not make you less human. "Ignorance has made many persons living with disabilities burdens, instead of being beneficial to the society. The primary purpose of the project is to influence society's viewpoint of PLWDs; to see them as people with special needs, who can do something to help themselves and the society at large. In addition, they were given GH¢40,000 personal donation by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. The two, who process sanitary pads using banana and plantain fibre, beat nine others who presented their ideas and answered questions before a panel of judges, in the presence of the President, ministers of state and members of the diplomatic corps, at the Presidential Pitch event in Accra. Parent of kidnapped girl rejects Police forensics report

A section of the busy city of Takoradi Alex Korankye, a father of one of the three kidnapped girls in western Ghana has rejected a police forensics investigation into body parts retrieved late last week. According to him, the police could not be trusted over the investigation and that the families were demanding an international probe. he said it was the only basis on which he will cooperate in a DNA test. “I cannot avail myself to that DNA test they are going to do. I have come to realize that I don’t believe in whatever has happened and that the bones found in that cesspit can’t be that of my daughter,” he told local news portal Joy FM. Lady sentenced for faking her kidnapping

File photo A 19-year-old, Beatrice Naa Lamley, has been sentenced to 12 months in prison for faking her own kidnapping. Beatrice, a mobile money vendor, on June 24 this year, conspired with three others to fake her kidnapping and demanded GH₵10,000 as ransom from her family.  A statement released Wednesday by the Accra Regional Police Command said her family reported the incident to the James Town Police and after two weeks of investigation, she was arrested at her hideout in Osu. The convict, Beatrice Lamley “The convict, on 24th June 2019 conspired with three others to fake her kidnap in demand for Ten Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH₵10,000) ransom from her family. The deceased, Mr Emmanuel Bugyei Until the icy hands of death reached for Mr Emmanuel Kwabena Bugyei, he was a final year student in B.Sc. Geomatic Engineering at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi. His sudden death came as a big blow to family and friends who have been deeply traumatized and wondered why the life of their beloved son and associate would end so abruptly. According to a brother of the deceased, Emmanuel returned from a church vigil service on Saturday and was hale and hearty as usual. Later in the day, he complained of shortness of breath and was thus assisted to the Taifa Polyclinic to seek medical attention. 2019 WASSCE results released - over 74,000 fail English Language

Results can now be accessed on WAEC's website The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the provisional results of candidates who wrote the West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) in 2019. According to a press release signed by the Head of Public Affairs of WAEC, Agnes Teye-Cudjoe, candidates can now access the results which have been hosted on the WAEC website. A 9.2% increase in the number of candidates was recorded on the number of candidates in 2018. The number of candidates who sat the WASSCE rose to 346,094 from 316,999. The highest number of students to pass a single core subject was recorded in the Social Studies exam with 257,828 (75.43%) candidates obtaining grades between A1-C6 which the most failures were recorded in the English Language exam with 74,038 (21.61%) obtaining grade F9. GIMPA Holds 19th Congregation For Undergraduates

GIMPA emblem On Saturday July 27, the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) held its 19th congregation for undergraduate students admitted to bachelor degree programs. The ceremony which commenced at about 9am at the WARC Park of the institute's main campus in Accra saw the procession of graduands, followed by the Convocation (senior members) and subsequently the Council. Invited dignitaries included the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency, Mrs Lydia Alhassan; widow of late Emmanuel Kyeremateng Agyarko, MP of the same constituency since 2012 until his untimely death in November 2018.
