On Saturday July 27, the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) held its 19th congregation for undergraduate students admitted to bachelor degree programs.

The ceremony which commenced at about 9am at the WARC Park of the institute's main campus in Accra saw the procession of graduands, followed by the Convocation (senior members) and subsequently the Council.

Invited dignitaries included the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency, Mrs Lydia Alhassan; widow of late Emmanuel Kyeremateng Agyarko, MP of the same constituency since 2012 until his untimely death in November 2018.

A speech delivered by the guest speaker and chairman for the session, Mr Kweku Andoh Awotwi, who doubles as the Executive Vice President of Tullow PLC. Limited, congratulated the graduands and also encouraged them to brace themselves for the world of work out there, to focus on building character as a complement to academic excellence for holistic impact.

Interestingly yet not utterly surprising, graduands who emerged with First-Class Honours for B.Sc. Human Resource Management and B.Sc Tourism and Hospitality Management were all females.

No graduand obtained a First-class Honours in B.Sc. Economics and B.Sc. Finance; somehow asserting the popular belief that 'Econs' is a really difficult course.

For the best graduating bachelor degree students  per School, there were:

1. School of Technology: Nii Kofi Akrashie Abbey – B.Sc. Computer Science with a CGPA of 3.78 on a scale of 0 to 4.0

2. School of Public Service and Governance: Thompson Agbodo – B.Sc. Public Administration with a CGPA of 3.76

3. Business School: George Ato Ghansa-Lutterodt – B.Sc. Business Administration with a CGPA of 3.90 which translates to a CWA of 97.5 percent.

The institute's award to the overall best undergraduate student for 2019 was obviously bagged by Master George Ato Ghansa-Lutterodt.

The ceremony which was  not without a drizzle of rain or as some say, 'showers of blessing' ended colourfully at about 12:00 pm.

Graduands from the satellite campuses of Tema, Takoradi and Kumasi were also present for the ceremony to receive their awards.

About GIMPA

The Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) was established in 1961 as a joint Ghana Government/United Nations (UN) special fund project. Originally named the Institute of Public Administration, it was set up as one of the key strategic institutions to develop the public administrative system; to provide civil servants with administrative and professional competence; and to plan and administer national, regional and local services.

In 1966, the joint sponsorship ended and the UN formally handed over the Institute to the government of Ghana. In 1969, the Institute was then re-designated as the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration to reflect its expanded functions. For more than 50 years, GIMPA's activities have been guided by five successive mandates, beginning with the first legislative instrument of 1961 to the current GIMPA Act, 2004 (Act 676). Each mandate affirmed the status of the Institute as the national management development institute to provide for the study of public administration and management of Ghana.

By its latest mandate, GIMPA now offers courses in its areas of competence leading to the award of certificates, diplomas and degrees up to the doctoral level. The areas of competence are defined to include training and education in leadership, management, public administration, technology and law. Today, GIMPA has transformed itself into the leading management development institute and is an independent public tertiary institution with financial and operational autonomy.

GIMPA's mission is to maintain a Centre of Excellence for training in public and business administration, by continuously enhancing the capability of middle and top level executives in public and private sectors as well as Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOS) both in Ghana and abroad, to manage their institutions and enterprises efficiently and effectively.

The Institute is accredited by the National Accreditation Board. In addition to the Institutional accreditation, GIMPA's academic programmes are also accredited by the National Accreditation Board.
