Disability is not inability: students undertake a life-affirming project

Image
SID Project A team of students from selected tertiary institutions in Ghana is embarking on a project intended to affect many lives positively and ultimately contribute significantly to societal development. The project, dubbed "Strength In Disability" (SID), is a joint effort of the Ghana Association of Disability and Rehabilitation Students (GADRES -KNUST) and other institutions which basically seeks to educate society on the relevance of Persons Living with Disabilities (PLWDs); and the fact that having a disability does not make you less human. "Ignorance has made many persons living with disabilities burdens, instead of being beneficial to the society. The primary purpose of the project is to influence society's viewpoint of PLWDs; to see them as people with special needs, who can do something to help themselves and the society at large. We hope this endeavour which has received due endorsement from our lecturers will make the intended impact," say

Even though it is mainly youth focused, older people can also watch to learn, unlearn and relearn to better understand the younger folk; their struggles, desires, and most things about their lives which may be

Need for Peace: To Our Next General Elections

Image
Ghana: Elections 2020 on 7th December By Bright Rockson On 7th December 2020, Ghana will hold its seventh general elections in the Fourth Republic to elect a President and Members of Parliament for the next four years of national administrative  life. The national atmosphere is tensed. All over the country, political campaigns  are heightened, taking on various shapes and colours;  local and international observers are ready to observe; new and experienced electorates are prepared to express their preference on the ballot paper. More than these, the campaign  for peace before, during, and after the elections is on - a cause supported by virtually all citizens; along with pacific echoes from the international  community. Prayers are being said, people are marching for peace, relevant videos and songs and posters are rife, just for peace to prevail. Since the Fourth Republic began, Ghanaians have experienced relatively peaceful elections and transition of power in sub-Saharan Africa. Yet

Thou Art November!

Image
This poem is dedicated to all who were born, have died and are living  in November. THOU ART NOVEMBER! 🕚 Thou art November,  The penultimate month of the year. For on the annual earth's annual clock, Thou art the eleventh hour. Thou bringeth hope when she is gone; Thou imparteth strength when we can't go on. Children love to play wild in thy weather calm; Couples in love lark openly in thy friendly arms; The birds of the air twitter in harmonious chorale,  For the aura of thy delightful season is that of  Calmness and warmth and enduring pleasantness. Thou art November, but known differently In the asssorted tongues of men the world over. Some calleth thee Novembre, Nufimbir, Shiyiyue. To others thou art known as Obubuo, Alemle, And still to others, Nuwamba, Adeemekporxe! Thou sitteth majestically like a comely noble prince,  Between those two that serve as thy faithful attendants: October on your left and December as thy right-hand man. And after a successful consultation w

The Beautiful Time

Image
Illustration. PC: RNZ Our class closed at 3:00 pm right after we ended a set of tedious laboratory sessions. Mensah and I were taking a stroll around campus to release the pile of stress that had accumulated over the week. It was a Friday evening, and as usual, every corner on campus was lit up with either a music bash here of a movie show there. Lest I forget, it was Valentine’s Day--the day of love as it has always been believed for the years past. The zeitgeist of love could be felt everywhere on the half dark campus. We walked towards the half-filled library with a pair of earpiece stuck in our ears. The sounds from Mensah’s earpiece was just so loud that he was almost knocked down by an old fashioned Mercedes Benz lest for my timely intervention. Mensah was the cantankerous type who always wanted to cry over spilt milk. I on the other hand was the very reserved type who wouldn’t mind him when he cracked his humorous jokes. As we crossed over to the other side of th

Episode 3 (Final): The D-Day Presently, both of our families were aware of our relationship. Akos was an only daughter, but not an only child, as she had a brother who was as fine as herself. It seemed to me that  fineness  ran throughout the family--from dad to mum to children. Akos was much like her mother, and her brother, Yaw, who was older than her, took the form of her father. I had met Yaw a couple of times on campus, when he used to come visit her dear sister. As time elapsed, I became a family friend to the Sarpongs. The D-day finally arrived. I went to Akos’ residence to pick her up for our much anticipated Friday night time-out. Luckily for us it was a holiday, so we both had time to rest from the week’s  busi-ness.  Of course, holidays bring some delight to those whose weekly schedules are largely occupied by work or school--and without a doubt, the greater joy goes to our dear students. Operation Neptune  arrived at her residence in a black Chevrolet Cruze.

Episode 2: Scaling Up Our Friendship It was on one occasion of a date at Chilly Bowl, in the first semester of my final year, that I asked if she would be my girlfriend. (The bond had become too strong to break, and I didn’t want to graduate 4-0,  hahaha ). She was stunned at first, and I got stunned too. She asked me to give her some time to think it over. I gladly consented, but deep within I feared I would be  bounced . As I patiently waited for my dear Akos to give me a favourable response, I would often get beset with mixed feelings. I told my roommate I had proposed to Akos. Kwao: Boy you for pray say she go accept oo. Me: What else chale. My love for her has transcended the skies. Kwao: You den your vibes. Me: No be small punch line oo chale. But e go source. After about two weeks since we last met at Chilly Bowl, I picked up my phone one Saturday evening to answer a call, and surprisingly, it was Akos. I hadn’t heard from after our recent date. We exchang

When The Lass I Was Loving for Years Finally Said Yes!: Episode 1

Episode 1: Getting Acquainted I sent her a text on WhatsApp, ‘‘Bae, we’ve got a date on Friday night at  Sparkles .’’ I’m sure she would have thought it would be one of our usual  rendezvous , where we would chit-chat all night long talking about ourselves, among other matters, and getting a bit amorous sometimes,  hahaha . But behind the scenes, something spectacular was  boiling . She sent a reply, ‘’OK boo. I’m anticipating and will prepare in advance. Love youuu.’’ ‘’Love you bunch,’’ I responded. I was also preparing ahead for this big day where I would pop the question to the love of my life. I couldn’t wait for that grand day--the D-day--to declare myself to my better half. You could imagine all the  sponging  and  grooming  that would go in on my side; and on the other side too, well, I couldn’t really guess. ’’Anticipate’’ was the only option.  Akos was a lovely and comely young woman. She was beautiful in every sense of the word. She was tall (I was taller), fair in
